My boyfriend said, "Humare ghar ki bahu lower aur T-shirt pehen ke nahi ghumti". am I overreacting?

Opinions & Discussions

So I casually asked my boyfriend if after marriage I'd be able to wear a lower and T-shirt at his house like I do at my own home. He said, "pehen toh sakti ho, but humare ghar ki bahu lower aur T-shirt pehen ke nahi ghumti."

I asked why, and he said it's because of family/society expectations.

The thing is, I don't want to argue with him about it because I know he has grown up seeing these things and probably considers them normal. I also know I can't change his family's mindset.

But personally, I can't imagine being happy in an environment where what I wear in my own home is decided by the fact that I'm the "bahu." I've seen the women in his family, and they seem comfortable with those traditions, but I don't think that lifestyle is for me.

I'm not asking whether his family is right or wrong. I'm wondering if this is a sign of a deeper compatibility issue in terms of values, freedom, and expectations from marriage.
