Need advice: Buy a new Hyundai now or a used Hyundai and save for a bigger car next year?

#Opinion 💭

Hi everyone, looking for some advice regarding a family car purchase.
We currently own a 2009 Hyundai i10 Era with around 1.8 lakh km on the odometer. Recently, the car has started developing multiple mechanical and technical issues, and considering the 20-year road regulations in many places, my father is planning to scrap/sell it and buy a new Hyundai.
Hyundai is currently offering a scrappage benefit of around ₹40–50k on a new car, which makes the offer tempting.
However, there’s a complication. I’m currently pursuing my studies outside my hometown, and next year (during my internship), I plan to take whichever car we buy to my college for daily use.
At the same time, our family was already planning to buy a bigger SUV (something like a Scorpio-N) next year for long-term family use. Buying two brand-new cars within a year feels like a significant financial burden.
Because of that, I suggested an alternative to my father:
- Scrap/sell the old i10.
- Buy a used Hyundai for now (maybe a Grand i10 Nios, i20, or even an i20 N-Line if we find a good deal).
- I can use that car during my internship.
- Next year, the family can comfortably buy the bigger SUV without stretching finances too much.
What would you guys do in this situation?
Would taking the ₹40–50k scrappage benefit and buying a new Hyundai now make more sense, or is buying a reliable used Hyundai for a year or two the smarter financial decision?
Also, any recommendations regarding good used Hyundai models to look for would be appreciated.
Thanks!
