People keep asking why Axe is carrying a hammer. Here's the actual lore.

Fluff

This comes up every few years because newer players assume Axe is named after the weapon he carries.

He isn't.

That's one of the oldest misconceptions in Dota.

According to the earliest Oglodi military records (most of which Valve quietly stopped referencing after the Source 2 migration), "Axe" was never the name of a weapon. It was a military rank.

Roughly translated, it meant:

"The soldier expected to solve problems by making there be fewer problems."

Every Oglodi legion had one.

There was Spear.

There was Shield.

There was Banner.

There was Quartermaster Greg.

And there was Axe.

Contrary to popular belief, Axe's real name has never been revealed. Oglodi tradition states that once a warrior earns the title of Axe, their birth name is ceremonially forgotten because names are for civilians and tax collectors.

Naturally, when he was promoted, the High Forge presented him with the legendary Axe of Axes.

This thing was absurd.

Forged from meteor iron.

Tempered in dragon blood.

Blessed by seven war shamans.

It supposedly became sharper every time it killed someone.

Needless to say, Axe loved it.

For exactly eleven minutes.

His first campaign was a complete success.

He cut through enemy ranks like paper.

The survivors fled in terror.

When scouts later questioned the survivors, every report sounded the same.

"Did you see that axe?"

"The axe was unbelievable."

"I've never seen an axe like that."

Nobody mentioned Axe.

Not once.

The weapon was getting all the credit.

This deeply offended him.

The following morning, Axe assembled the entire legion.

Without saying a word, he lifted the legendary artifact above his head...

...and threw it so hard that it left the atmosphere.

Modern astronomers still debate whether the object known as the Crimson Wanderer is a comet or simply Axe refusing to admit he overreacted.

Then he picked up the nearest heavy object.

A blacksmith's hammer.

He walked into the next battle.

Flattened three hundred soldiers before lunch.

Returned completely drenched in blood.

The official report simply read:

"Axe attacked."

Not:

"The hammer attacked."

Satisfied that history had finally assigned credit correctly, Axe declared the experiment a success.

From that day onward, he refused to use axes ever again.

Kings attempted to gift him jeweled axes.

Dwarves forged rune axes.

Elves carved living axes from enchanted trees.

Demons offered axes made from the fossilized regrets of forgotten gods.

A traveling merchant even invented what he proudly called "the ergonomic axe."

Axe accepted every gift.

Then used each one to hammer tent pegs into the ground before throwing it into a nearby ravine.

Over several centuries this accidentally created what historians call The Great Axe Pile.

The pile became so enormous that it appeared on maps.

Three villages were founded on it.

One kingdom declared sovereignty over the southern slope.

Axe reclaimed the territory after remembering he'd left a nice axe there about forty years earlier.

Military historians estimate the conflict lasted somewhere between six hours and "however long it took everyone to apologize."

People often ask why Axe doesn't simply rename himself Hammer.

The answer is actually recorded in the Proceedings of the Third Oglodi Administrative Council.

Article XII.

Section 9.

"Changing a military title every time a warrior picks up a different object would create unacceptable paperwork."

The motion passed unanimously after a clerk was accidentally promoted to Mace.

This is also why no one corrects Axe anymore.

There is exactly one recorded incident.

An enemy commander shouted:

"That's not an axe! It's a hammer!"

Witnesses report Axe stopped charging.

Looked down at the hammer.

Looked back at the commander.

Thought for a moment.

Then replied:

"It is an axe."

The commander attempted to argue using what scholars describe as "basic vocabulary."

He was immediately promoted to "fine red mist."

Following this event, every surviving blacksmith in the known world met in secret and unanimously agreed that whatever Axe is currently holding shall henceforth be legally recognized as an axe.

This is why weapon catalogs contain entries like:

War Axe

Hand Axe

Throwing Axe

Poleaxe

Greataxe

Hammer (Axe Variant)

Brick (Situational Axe)

Chair (Improvised Axe)

Another Smaller Axe (Emergency Axe)

The recent toy version carrying a hammer isn't a redesign.

It's historical accuracy.

Valve is finally acknowledging the oldest piece of Oglodi canon: Axe has spent most of his career proving that an axe isn't a weapon.

It's a state of mind.

And if tomorrow Axe picked up a fish, every encyclopedia in existence would receive the same update by sunrise.

Fish (noun): A medium-sized aquatic axe commonly wielded by Axe.

No further explanation would be provided.

Because nobody wants to be the first person to tell Axe he's wrong.
