Oil just had its worst week in months. According to Trading Economics, WTI crude fell below $70/barrel on June 24, extending losses for a fourth consecutive session and wiping out nearly all gains made since the Middle East conflict began. According to the IEA's June 2026 Oil Market Report, Brent has collapsed more than $40/barrel from its wartime peak, the UAE is now exporting at nearly 85% of pre-war levels, and Strait of Hormuz shipments have recovered from a May low of 9.6 million barrels per day to around 12 million. The peace trade is unwinding the geopolitical premium that drove XLE to its 52-week high of $63.46 in March. According to Robinhood, XLE is trading at $54.04 today, up 21% year to date but down 11.22% over the past month.

The energy sector is sitting at the intersection of the Iran peace deal, OPEC supply decisions, and US inventory data that is flashing its own contradictory signals.

Rift puts institutional-grade news and market intelligence next to every trade. It's like having a Bloomberg terminal in your pocket. When the next Strait of Hormuz shipping update, Iran negotiation headline, or EIA weekly inventory figure drops, you see it before it has moved the tape.

According to the EIA's June 2026 Short-Term Energy Outlook, global oil demand is forecast to decrease 1.1 million barrels per day in 2026, the worst demand reading since COVID, as high prices destroyed consumption across Asia. The EIA also assumes Strait flows resume in Q3 2026, which would add further supply at exactly the moment demand is weakest. The contradiction: according to Trading Economics, the American Petroleum Institute reported Cushing crude inventories fell by 1 million barrels, potentially dipping below critical minimum operating levels. Supply is structurally tighter in the US even as global oil prices crater on peace deal optimism. According to ETF Database, XLE pulled $1.74 billion in outflows over the past month and $1.03 billion over the past 3 months, signaling institutional positioning is moving out of the sector on the peace trade.

Some traders are buying XLE here because at a P/E of 19.37x and a 2.77% dividend yield, US energy majors like ExxonMobil and Chevrolet, which together represent over 40% of XLE's holdings, are generating substantial free cash flow at $70 oil and have balance sheets built for $50, meaning the selloff is pricing in a commodity outcome that the underlying businesses can absorb without cutting dividends. According to CNBC on June 19, the Iran peace talks in Switzerland were abruptly postponed as JD Vance pulled out citing unresolved logistical issues, and WTI immediately gained 1.23% on the headline, showing the market is not yet willing to price in a fully resolved peace. Others are staying cautious because according to the IEA, even a full Strait reopening will not immediately restore pre-war oil flows due to demining operations and supply chain normalization that will take several months, and the EIA's demand destruction estimate of 1.1 million barrels per day in 2026 means a peace-driven supply increase could hit a market with permanently lower demand, pushing WTI toward $60 before any recovery.
