Vacuum brazing of copper to stainless steel provides an ideal solution for liquid-cooled cold plates in AI servers, combining the exceptional thermal conductivity of copper with the superior mechanical strength and corrosion resistance of stainless steel.

This metallurgical joining process ensures reliable hermetic sealing and structural integrity for components operating under demanding thermal cycling conditions.

The vacuum brazing cycle requires a controlled, multi-tiered heating profile to manage internal stresses and eliminate contaminants. The initial stage involves raising the temperature to an intermediate plateau to promote uniform thermal distribution across different material thicknesses and completely volatilize residual surface impurities. A secondary preheating phase balances the temperature gradients before approaching the alloy's melting range, ensuring the assembly transitions uniformly into the active brazing phase.

Traversing the melting range of the brazing filler metal requires optimized ramp rates to prevent compositional segregation. Once the target brazing temperature is reached, the system maintains a strict isothermal hold. During this critical window, the fully molten filler metal flows through the joint clearance via capillary action, initiating mutual diffusion between the copper and stainless steel base metals. This diffusion creates a robust, high-strength metallurgical bond capable of withstanding operational pressure variations.

The final phase of the process emphasizes controlled vacuum cooling within the furnace to safeguard the structural integrity and surface quality of the joined materials. Unloading must only occur after the internal temperature drops to a safe threshold to prevent atmospheric oxidation and discoloration of the copper. Executing this precise thermal cycle requires high-performance vacuum brazing equipment capable of maintaining strict temperature uniformity, low pressure-rise rates, and rapid cooling capabilities.
