My dad has always loved traveling and taking photos.

He used to have a few old cameras, and one of them is a Canon EOS 5D Mark II that my mom gave him as an anniversary gift, so he has always taken really good care of it. He likes photography, but he’s not really the type to chase the newest pro gear. It’s more about recording trips, family moments, and everyday life.

When he was younger, he traveled to a lot of beautiful places like mountains and nlakes. One of his travel photos even almost won an award, though he always acts super casual about it.

He just retired this year and has been talking about traveling more again. So for Father’s Day, I looked around online at some newer cameras and also asked a few friends who are into photography. I ended up getting him an Insta360 Luna Ultra. From what I understand, it’s more of a travel-friendly camera that’s mainly built for video, but it can also take photos, which felt like a decent fit for how he likes to travel now. Not sure if I made the right call, though.

Part of me thinks it could be nice for trips, since it’s lighter and easier to grab than his old camera setup. But that old Canon also has a lot of sentimental value, so I’m not sure if a newer camera will actually replace anything for him.

Has anyone here gifted their dad a camera or something travel-related before? Do older dads actually use new tech gifts, or do they justt stick to what they already love?
