AITAH for cutting off a 5 year friendship without explanation?

NSFWNSFW

I (18 AFAB) had an online friend (18 M) that I met during my freshman year of high school in 2021. He messaged me on Instagram first and we started talking. We had similar interests in shows and music, so we hit it off great. For the first three years of our friendship, we were completely platonic. He would often say "ily" to me because he was affectionate with everyone, and while I didn't really feel comfortable saying it back, he understood and we didn't make a huge deal out of it. That was, until August/September of 2024, when he began to act very strangely.

He would start sending me a lot of couples-related content, asking to kiss/cuddle me if we ever met up, saying he was in love with me and how I was "so hot and sexy", among similar things. All of this was done while he knew I was interested in girls and a sexual-repulsed asexual. These messages came out of nowhere over the span of a few weeks, and they made me super uncomfortable, but because he was my friend and at the time I was severely depressed and lonely, I just went with it. If he asked for photos of my thighs or face, which he knew I was very insecure about and wasn't comfortable sharing, I would make up excuses and tell him I really didn't want to. He would reply with a disappointed "sigh.." or "but I think you're so cute", and it would gross me out. Only one time did I actually send a photo, and it was not sexual at all. If he told me he wanted to kiss or hug me, I would give an "oh maybe" or "hah sure.." and try to change the subject. It was painfully obvious how uninterested I was, but because I didn't want to hurt his feelings or lose a friend, I didn't outright say it.

He started to cross a line when he sent me moaning audios of himself. I had initially joked about people sending whimpering audios to their partners, and he asked if I wanted one. I jokingly said yes, thinking he wasn't being serious, but he proceeded to send me two. One even had him saying "fuck.." while making a noise with his hands (?) and he told me he was thinking about me while recording them. He also expressed very sexual desires he had with me; he told me when he was "horny" and asked if I had master*ated before, how he wanted me to choke him with my thighs/sit on his face, and more things I can't remember. If I told him no or that I didn't like what he said, he would "apologize" but then say the same thing a week later. There were some other parts of him that I disliked such as him fetishizing Asians (I'm Asian), being fatphobic towards girls and saying they're rude, and overall that edgy teenage boy humor.

All of these things caused me so much confusion and emotional distress. A part of me liked the attention, not because it was from him, but because I had never felt love before and the idea that anyone would like me at all made me happy. But I also felt so grossed out and disgusted by his actions. I didn't like the things he said about my body. They made me feel objectified. I would s*lf harm and cry if I thought he didn't want to talk to me but also hated him when he texted. He was the only notification I allowed on my phone but also made me angry if i saw his face when he posted.

Finally, he actually found a girlfriend in mid 2025 in his town and his messages came to a stop. I felt so relieved that I could live my life normally again without going insane. But deep down, I still hated him. I hated how he treated me like I was just something to vent his sexual/romantic desires onto. I hated how he romanticized my mental illnesses and didn't understand when I wanted space. I hated how I still wanted to stay friends even when I hated him. For the next few months, I pretended like we were normal again. His "ily" texts didn't stop, but he amount of sexual stuff did. I was very apathetic towards him for a long time. I finally came to my senses and I block him from all social medias this June, a year after he stopped. Now I feel really bad, since I didn't explain anything and just dropped him out of the blue, but I knew if I tried explaining he would try to act like he didn't know at all and that these were from a year ago, so it was okay. Am I in the wrong for not explaining to him?
