My sentiments regarding Goh
Yo guys, so I'm on like the half way point of pokemon journeys and I must say, I'm not too fond of this Goh guy. I'm on my second watch (last time I watched it, I was like 12? and the series wasn't completed yet). And even back then I was pretty frustrated, sometimes so much to the point where I cried at night (yes I'm serious) because I hated him but I didn't know why, I couldn't quite figure it out, but now I'm a bit older and I have more clarity regarding my emotions.
Back then I was just like "why is this guy catching pokemons so easily" "how did he get all the galar starters (and in an main character sorta way too)", etc etc. I even thought his backstory was lack luster and it was just like adding seasoning to boiled chicken haha. I'm fine with side characters having the spotlight every once in a while, especially in those animes where they're telling a story, but in pokemon, it's Ash's story and I think the characters should sort of serve a purpose to his character whether they're sort of like siblings to him, mentors, rivals, love interest, etc.
In other animes, the side characters will have a moment of spotlight, and this usually happens when their backstories are revealed, when they overcome their fears or when they achieve their dreams, but for Goh's scenario, it happens in a way that usually happens to THE main character. I wouldn't have minded him getting all 3 starters if each of those moments weren't as emotional and if they didn't portray him as like THE main character yk.
Most pokemon fans, including myself watched every pokemon series or almost all pokemon series prior to watching pokemon journeys (in my case I watched everything) and we have formed a bit of an emotional bond to ash's character (I hope you guys won't clown me for this 😭) and seeing Ash sort of pushed to the sideline just hurt and that anger was released towards Goh I think. I don't think he'll achieve his ultimate goal of catching mew If I'm being honest, which will put him in a category of side characters with big dreams who departs to chase their dreams but usually those characters wouldn't take as much screen time you know.
I just thought journeys would be the last time we properly see ash and it would be the final piece where ash ascends to pokemon master-hood XD. I thought it would be all about him but from the way things are going right now, I'm not confident, to say the least. I was also never the type of guy to want the mc to have everything, or be the centre 24/7 (like solo leveling or those other 12 episode harem anime slop). Infact I was fine when Ash lost in the finals back in Kalos and I was also fine in other animes where the main character wasn't the strongest, wasn't always in the centre and even sometimes when they're borderline pathetic. One of the best examples of this is my favorite anime world trigger (boy the mc is ass) but his character is so complex and well written that I can't help but appreciate it.
But Goh doesn't seem that way you know. He just comes out as bratty to me. I try to look at different perspectives surrounding Goh in this subreddit and a lot of people share a similar sentiment to me but I also see people defending him? It irritated me a bit when they said "it's just an anime character " :( and it sorta made me feel guilty about being this passionate about an anime.
TLDR; I think he takes up too many big moments, he gets the key screentimes, he catches pokemon very easily, his character sort of pushes ash to the side, and he does stuff that you'd expect the mc to be doing in my opinion. His character is nowhere near complex enough in my opinion to justify all of the above. thoughts?
