How long do friendships at school/college last?How to find people who care?

Hi, So I am currently graduating from high school and going to college this year. I haven't always been the luckiest really when it comes to making friends atleast in school. Most of the people I was friends with were too obsessed becoming popular, doing the stuff that the "cool" kids at school did, etc etc. I enjoyed their company but now that school is all done with most of them really dont even talk to me or each other anymore. I understand that maybe we've drifted apart a bit given the entrance exams, college stuff etc BUT COME ON I have known these people since like the 6th grade man and its not only them. I mean, I've had a good share of friends and known most of them for a very long time we do confide in each other. But, give it a month or so of not talking and they simply don't care anymore. Most of them care about who looks the best, who is the funniest, coolest etc and once you are not one of them they probably will just sideline you. All the energy and time i've devoted to these people have more or less gone to waste we are close to strangers now expect for a very handful few. My school is kind of infamous in my city for drugs , alc , playboys/girls etc so i've never really thought much of this other than "oh maybe everyone here is like this".I am not keen of wasting my time again, I have big dreams and ambhitions.... I just want to know if most people I will meet are like this? Is friendship these days simply so superficial?Is it a waste of time building friendships and trust expecting help if needed and providing the same if necessary? Are you guys still in touch with most of your college friends? How do I make better friends who maybe care?
