2019 Mazda 3 touch handles not working?

I just purchased a 2019 Mazda 3 Gs Luxury. The touch handles for the keyless entry dont work, however the push to start works just fine. The batteries in the key fob are new. The woman I bought it from is the original owner and she claims that the touch handles to lock/unlock the door never worked. The capacitive touch pads are clearly there on the handle. What could be the problem? There also isnt the button under the mazda logo to release the trunk on the back. Weird. Any thoughts?
