I'm looking to get my first electric guitar.

Does it matter what type I get for the genre I want to learn to play? I'm really into old african eletric guitar players and that whats inspired me to learn and the direction of playing and learning I want to go down. They do lots of finger picking and less on the strumming side. If you want examples (if they are needed, I can post links below)
Really new to guitars but its something I'm passionate about starting a journey with. Help is greatly aprecciated.
