Never practiced witchcraft but Im trying to protect myself

Hello, as the title says, I have never done witchcraft before. The only witchy thing I do is talk to the wind and trees. But I am looking to ward my name. I've done some research, and I'm still quite confused and scared I will accidentally curse myself. I would really appreciate it if I could be pointed in the right direction on where else to research, or just some overall help. Thank you all !!!
