yearning for someone you’ve just met

I met a guy a few days ago. I know his name, his age, and that’s about it. I remember the sound of his voice and the simple conversation we had that lingered in my mind way after it had ended. It echoed in my mind while I went home that day, my cheeks flushing all the way. Only wishing we had enough time that day.
Yet, he doesn’t know my name, because I never got a chance to tell him. And perhaps that’s the cruelest part. I now carry someone within my heart while I might just be a stranger in theirs.
Ever since I found myself relentlessly searching for him, in every familiar street, in every passing crowd with the hope of seeing him again just once. I look for him in every silhouette that resembles him from a distance only for it to dissolve into someone else when they get closer.
I might be delusional and it is absurd I know. But I can’t help it. There was something so unbearably lovely about that brief moment we shared. It was a small moment, something that the world would instantly forget the moment it passes. And yet I have carried it with me ever since. I wonder if he remembers me at all. I wonder if my face has been washed away from his memory like that footprint in the sand near the sea. Or if, sometimes, in a rainy day or a quiet night, he too recalls a conversation that should have meant nothing and somehow meant everything.
Perhaps, I’m the fool here. Perhaps it’s my fault for mistaking kindness for destiny. Perhaps I was merely another face among hundreds he encountered that day. But who is to say?
These thoughts keep me up all night because for one fleeting moment, he looked at me as though I existed. And since, I have been haunted by the possibility of what might have been. I feel so stupid and guilty because i am grieving something that was never truly mine. And perhaps that is why it hurts so much.
