Am I the A**HOLE for not allowing him to blur the lines between friends
I am 45f who started hanging out with my half sister's cousin. We will call him Chris 48m
He and my little sister hung out on a 420 convenience thing which I stayed out of but after he was assaulted he began to drink a lot and disappearfrom social events. I noticed that he seems to be depressed and drinking to the point of falling asleep in public and passing out and losing track of time . Needless to say, I was just a little bit worried. So when we hung out, I would always ask if he was okay. And if he was coming.
Never anything flirty, just asking out of concern, because he had actually been through something pretty serious. 1 day I got a message, I believe it was on social media. Asking, if I wanted to hang out watch sports we did a couple times and then he asked me help him look at apartments, as I was also looking for apartments. I told him that what we were looking for in apartments was different. Because I was a single woman and my safety hinges on picking the right type of neighborhood, but I would be more than willing to go and look with him as I was interested as to what was available. And what the price range was. We drove around, we looked at apartments. He offer to be my roommate and i said i would think about it .We talked and we'd go get food, and then that would be the end of it.We did that for a few days, he was excited to show me his new car which I thought was cool and he showed me some of the features. We also hung out with my sister and the regular friend group on a couple of occasions as a huge group as we did before nothing strange.
At this point I would explain that I don't smoke and he smokes quite often. Okay, cut to a vacation that was canceled with a male friend of mine. I had a week off and I was supposed to go out of town and due to financial issues.I did not go. Hey knew I was supposed to go and he said, since you're not going, do you wanna hang out?And see how my car performs under different circumstances. I really had nothing better to do. And so I was like, yeah, sure, and we hung out for a day on a day trip. And drove back. Because he was grateful that I drove with him.He bought me something from mall i also bought my own things.I just didn't have a lot of money.
During this months that we hung out, I had a financial thing, come up.And I did ask to borrow money, but this is not something I make a habit of. We had a very vague payback schedule. But a payback schedule nonetheless.
During the time that we were hanging out, he finds a place to move. And he moves in, which was a nice place. We did some shopping for furniture. And appliances and none of which were made as a couple decision. Just he asked my opinion, I tell him my opinion and we go on from there and he make the final decision. I gave him some decorating ideas and tips and gave him access to some discounted.Items. so one night he asked, did I want to hang out at his new place so I can help him set up his television and put some lamps together.Little stuff that new apartments require because he was having issues with them. I did. We even stopped at the grocery store. And I grabbed some food to cook and made dinner and dessert, but nothing romantic.
We had already had a discussion that we were just friends, and that I'd like to keep it that way. But after helping him set up his television and put some furniture together, he made a comment that I didn't like... he said that I am the best girlfriend he ever had.
As I said before, during our hangouts, I made it quite clear that I'm not looking to date anybody, especially not him. And there was nothing against him. I just wasn't looking for it. And I told him, I don't like blurred lines. I like to keep my boundaries pretty clear. And if it ever got to the point where lines were blurred, then I would cut all ties.
So when we got to the girlfriend comment, I was pretty taken aback. I made sure to mention. I am not his girlfriend and I didn't like the comment he was making, and that seemed to blur lines. And i've already explained to him how I feel about that.
So I packed up my things and went home. I explained to him on the way home that I didn't like how that felt, and I've already explained that I don't want to move into a relationship with him. Nor do I want to lead him on.
Am I the A**HOLE for telling him never to call me again??.I explained that I wasn't angry... but I wanted to cautiously back out of a situation that was uncomfortable for me.
He called me non-stop and threatened to harass me. Because he doesn't work. And he told me that I had p***** off the wrong person even though we weren't dating I wanted to stop hanging out because it just didn't feel right. Then, he began to harass me about the money that I borrowed to force me to have to talk to him.But the agreement had not changed. He began to berate me explained that the reason the other guy did not want me on vacation with him is because I was a horrible person, and I was not worth the time to hang out. We've been in the same place since then And there are photos of him making faces of disgust at me in the background. But am I the a** hole for setting clear boundaries???
