Why do some cars with higher horsepower take more time to accelerate than those with lower hp?

From my understanding, high hp generally means the car can accelerate faster. I was comparing cars on consumer reports but I see some cars with high hp take more time to reach certain mph than others with lower hp, even though they are about the same size (suv). Why is that?
