Is OOB known for fights?

Hi everyone. Out of towner here, drove up to OOB to vacation w my girlfriend's family. She used to come up every year as a child so this was supposed to be a nostalgia trip for the family. I was excited for the Americana vibe- rides, games, fried food, family friendly atmosphere.

Last night on the strip, there were hundreds of unsupervised kids/teens. I'm talking body-to-body crowds. 3-4 fights broke out during and following the Thursday night fireworks show on the beach. Police were overwhelmed & outnumbered trying to diffuse the fights.

I'm here to ask - Is it always like this at OOB? I've never seen anything like what I witnessed last night happening in Maine in my life. Based on last night's experience, we'll never be coming back, which makes me pretty sad to say. Felt like the twilight zone.
