my piercing ripped my nipple in half

My nipple piercing got stuck while closing a door, and now I have a nipple cutted in two half and no piercing. Do I need stitches? I went to the hospital but they put on me little patches on a x shape, will it be enough? How long does it take to heal if this has happened to you? Will the two halves reunite into a single nipple again, or will they become two nipples if I don't have stitches?
