Annual Pass activation and resort stay

My annual pass expired a couple years ago. I’m planning on purchasing a new one, activating during a trip in March.

However, my husband and I were thinking of doing a quick 1-2 night stay and it would be nice to be able to use the AP discount to book.

I know my new AP won’t activate until I scan into a park. But can I buy one now, and use it to book a resort room? We may or may not do a park during this quick trip and I wouldn’t necessarily want to activate it “early” if I didn’t have to.
