Downgrading cdl to regular dl?

So, I’m getting a plumbing apprenticeship and they are having issues with my background check because my fedmed is expired. They said I either have to go through the clearinghouse and update my fedmed or remove the cdl from my license.

I only drove from 2024-2025 and don’t plan on going back, but I do like having it as a backup option.

Can it be easily restored if needed? What are the consequences here I’m a little scared to do that after all the work I put in to gain my cdl. (I will not pass a dot drug test right now…) my dmv says I have 8 years to reinstate but she seemed very against me removing it that made me worried.
