Are mediums using anything besides cold reading to guess such specific things?

So I've had a few different family members visit a "psychic medium" a couple towns over, and they are totally convinced that this dude was talking to our deceased relatives.

Now before they all went, I'd usually be pretty skeptical of anything to do with "spirits" or whatever you want to call them. But some details that this guy was explaining were pretty spot on in places.

For example, my great grandfather used to take most of my family out to eat every couple months at a local buffet. I guess this guy was feeling his presence and was describing the smell of food and people talking. Now I know that's something that could apply to many families, but it was something he was known for, so I'm sure it really convinced my family.

One other thing that kinda freaked me out was that he pretty much guessed one of our extremely close family friends name that had passed a few years ago. He said he was playing cards with my uncle who had passed last January.

Honestly I'm starting to be convinced that ts is real. I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences.

(and yeah ik about cold reading, I just don't know how he could've guessed some of that stuff)
