Triple feeding hell
Triple feeding?
I am 3 weeks PP and had great hopes to breast feed. We had also been giving a bottle of formula at night so my partner could feed and I could get some sleep.
I asked to see a lactation consultant mainly as I was having intermittent issues with latch being shallow and painful
Baby back to birth weight after 3 weeks and gaining weight but slowly ( 50-60g per week)
I was hoping to see the LC for tips on positioning/ latch and practical tips.
To my utter disappointment and horror she was extremely concerned about the slow weight gain and put me on a triple feeding schedule as follows:
Pumping three hourly total of 8 times per day
Breastfeeding 2-3 hourly for 20 minutes
Top ups ( either EBM or formula) to a total of 300mls per day given as 30 or 60mls at a time
A few days into this and I am exhausted, deflated and emotional. I'm actually finding the breastfeeding part of it is harder now than before so I'm not sure if all the bottles and top ups are affecting his desire to latch or ' work' at sucking. He is definitely more reluctant to latch than before.
Of course I want to see his weight gain improve but I felt that some actual support with the practical aspects of breastfeeding with a view to top ups as a SOS would be more helpful, rather than this complex routine.
I am actually thinking of switching to formula altogether as this feels unsustainable and exhausting
Has anyone had similar experiences?
