Anyone find it interesting how many recent James Gunn movies deal with animal abuse?

Starro in The Suicide Squad, The High Evolutionary and Rocket's past in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Lex Luthor kidnapping and torturing Krypto and Superman caring about the kaiju in Superman. Is James Gunn an animal rights activist or an animal lover?
