Riviera Maya Car recommendation?

Question (that is not looking for a resort recommendation)

I have a trip for 4 people over new years to the excellence riviera maya (did the suite + flights). Is it better to book the shuttle service, take an uber/lyft, or rent a car to the resort? Anyone with experiences with any of these?
