For people living with diabetes, foot care is not just a recommendation—it’s a necessity. Diabetes can affect blood circulation and damage nerves in the  feet, making it harder to notice cuts, blisters, or injuries. Without proper care,these minor issues can develop into serious complications such as diabetic foot ulcers, infections, and even amputation.

**Following a Daily Diabetic Foot Care Checklist can help reduce these risks and keep your feet healthy.** The good news is that many diabetic foot complications can be prevented through simple daily habits and regular diabetic foot assessments. By following a structured diabetic foot care routine,  **Is Daily Diabetic Foot Care Important?**

People with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing:

* Diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage)
* Poor blood circulation
* Foot ulcers
* Daily diabetic foot care helps:
* Skin infections
* Delayed wound healing

When sensation in the feet decreases, small injuries may go unnoticed. Combined with reduced blood flow, even a tiny cut can become a serious diabetic foot ulcer if not treated promptly.

# Morning Foot Care Checklist

# 1. Inspect Your Feet Carefully

Start every morning by examining your feet.

Look for:

* Cuts or scratches
* Blisters
* Redness
* Swelling
* Cracks in the skin
* Calluses
* Changes in skin color

Pay special attention to the soles of your feet and between your toes. If you have difficulty seeing certain areas, use a mirror or ask a family member for assistance.

Early detection is one of the most effective ways to prevent diabetic foot complications.

# 2. Wash Your Feet Properly

Wash your feet daily using lukewarm water and mild soap.

Important precautions:

* Avoid hot water
* Do not soak your feet for extended periods
* Test water temperature with your hand first

After washing, dry your feet thoroughly, especially between the toes.

Excess moisture can increase the risk of fungal infections.

# 3. Moisturize Dry Skin

Diabetes often causes dry skin, which can crack and create entry points for bacteria.

Apply a moisturizer to:

* Heels
* Soles
* Dry areas of the feet

Avoid applying lotion between the toes, as trapped moisture may encourage fungal growth.

# Throughout the Day: Protect Your Feet

# 4. Wear Diabetic-Friendly Footwear

Proper footwear plays a major role in diabetic foot ulcer prevention.

Choose shoes that:

* Fit comfortably
* Provide adequate cushioning
* Have sufficient toe space
* Do not rub against the skin

Before wearing your shoes, inspect the inside for:

* Small stones
* Sharp objects
* Torn linings

Even minor pressure points can cause wounds in people with [diabetic neuropathy](https://happydiabeticfoot.com/diabetic-neuropathy/).

# 5. Always Wear Socks

Wear clean, dry socks made from breathable materials.

Benefits include:

* Reduced friction
* Improved comfort
* Protection against blisters

Avoid tight elastic bands that may restrict circulation.

# 6. Never Walk Barefoot

Many diabetic foot injuries occur at home.

Walking barefoot increases the risk of:

* Cuts
* Burns
* Puncture wounds
* Infections

Wear protective footwear indoors and outdoors.

# 7. Stay Physically Active

Regular exercise improves blood circulation and supports overall diabetic foot health.

Suitable activities include:

* Walking
* Swimming
* Cycling
* Stretching exercises

Improved circulation helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to the feet, promoting healthy tissue function.

# 8. Perform a Second Foot Inspection

At the end of the day, inspect your feet again.

Look for:

* New blisters

# 9. Elevate Your Feet

If you experience mild swelling, elevate your feet while resting.

This may help improve circulation and reduce discomfort.

Avoid crossing your legs for long periods, as it may restrict blood flow.

# Weekly Foot Care Checklist

# 10. Trim Toenails Safely

Improper nail trimming can lead to ingrown toenails and infections.

Best practices:

* Trim nails straight across
* Avoid cutting too short
* Use clean nail clippers
* Smooth edges with a nail file

If you have poor vision, limited flexibility, or thickened nails, seek professional podiatry care.

# 11. Check Your Shoes

Inspect footwear weekly for:

* Worn-out soles
* Rough seams
* Damaged insoles
* Foreign objects

Well-maintained footwear is an important part of diabetic foot ulcer prevention.

# Monthly Foot Care Checklist

# 12. Monitor Changes in Foot Health

Keep track of:

* Numbness
* Tingling sensations
* Persistent swelling
* Changes in foot shape
* Recurring wounds

Documenting symptoms can help your healthcare provider identify developing complications.

# 13. Review Your Blood Sugar Control

Consistently high blood sugar levels increase the risk of diabetic neuropathy and poor wound healing.

Managing diabetes effectively supports long-term foot health.

# Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore

Contact a diabetic foot specialist immediately if you notice:

⚠ A wound that does not heal
⚠ Redness spreading around a wound
⚠ Foot swelling
⚠ Pus or discharge
⚠ Blackened skin

* Foot structure
* Ulcer risk factors
