What's the point of the hardened blade?

Does it cause more damage than the survival knife? I found the blade in a time capsule below the floating island when I first found the Degasi base (where you scan the multipurpose room and such) and it served as a temporary "upgrade" to my survival knife but the thermoblade just made it permanently obsolete.
