Mother Mary can be called our mother?
My pastor has a very low view of Mariology and does not teach that Mary is the “mother of Christians.” Still, when I talked to him, he said he didn’t see a problem with me using that expression, as long as I understood it in a figurative sense, not as a doctrine.
The analogy he made was the following: we say Protestants are heirs of the Reformation and, in that sense, “children of Luther.” Likewise, he understood that calling Mary the “mother of Christians” could be a form of analogical language, without implying the full Catholic Mariology.
He did not change the doctrinal position of the church or insist that others use the expression. On the contrary, he simply showed pastoral openness and allowed me to hold that view without treating it as a major issue.
What do you think of this approach? Does the analogy make sense, or do you see important differences between the two cases?
