AITJ for filing complaints and leaving a bad review on a dealership?
So I recently bought a used car. I’ve had it for less than 2 months and the check engine light came on & had electrical issues (car wouldn’t recognize the key fob, doors wouldn’t unlock, power seats wouldn’t work, etc.) This was confusing since the only thing I’d done to it was pay around $200 to have a dash cam professionally installed.
when I called the dealer I bought the car from and they said their mechanics aren’t certified for the brand so they told me to take it to a local brand dealer. If it was covered they’d pay, if not I’d owe a $230 diagnostic plus repairs all out of pocket. Mind you I was sure it was covered cus I have a dealership warranty, the car brand warranty, and a separate extended warranty.
So I took my car to get serviced first they had the car for a few days and inspected it, lifted the car, etc but ultimately they said everything checked out so they just cleared the code and told me to come get it to drive around to see if it was just an old code that would go away.
it wasn’t. the issues continued and I had to bring the car back the very next day (In fact the check engine light came back on before I even left the dealer but I had no way to get home so they said to drive it home and avoid the streets and bring it back tomorrow)
at this point I also noticed a scratch on the car which I have pictures of before vs after. I mentioned it to them when I returned the car the next day and they said it was small and they’d buff it out easy to fix it.
They had the car 3 weeks (gave me a loaner) and found the electrical issues were from a y splitter the original dealer installed before I bought it. They said it wasn’t compatible and was causing the electrical issues and needed to come out. But that they were having trouble contacting my dealership to confirm they’d pay so they asked me to call them.
I did and spoke w the used car manager who said they put device on all their cars (still don’t get why they’d install something on a brand they said they can’t service but whatever). the dealer only paid the $230 diagnostic and refused to pay to remove the splitter, so the tech said he’d just take it out since it’s an easy job and that everything should be good from there.
So I come down sign a release form, drive off, and get home to two problems. The scratch was never fixed, and my dash cam wasn’t shutting off when the car turns off like it’s supposed to. It’s a Kingslim with a hardwire low voltage parking kit made to cut off when the car’s off so it doesn’t drain the battery. I check the release form and it says “dash cam was incorrectly installed, reinstalled to correct fuse.”
They never once mentioned the dash cam the whole time they had it and I never authorized them touching it. Then I pull the footage and it ran nonstop for 24 hours in their lot after they changed the fuse, cuts out for 2 days, and only picks back up the day I got it. Leading me to believe that the battery died although they deny this.
I messaged the rep who was helping me and explained all of this to him for help. First he said it would cut off after 15 minutes which wasn’t true since I saw footage of it running for 24 hour straight before dying out.
Than he said that the tech connected it to the headlights and that if the headlights were off the dash cam should be off and I told him again the car is entirely off including the headlights but the camera is still running and will drain my battery.
at this point asked if I could bring it back in to have it returned to its original state. He replied saying he wouldn’t be able to because the mechanic had to move it when of the y splitter was removed which made no sense to me since it was never brought up to me at all in the 3 weeks they had my car.
He then suggested I take it to my original installer saying they can’t work on it because it’s An after market part (after they already moved it without my okay).
I told him my installer quoted me 50 for the repair and asked if they’d cover it and he said no.
So I left a 2 star yelp review laying it all out, emailed the car brand, and filed a complaint with the bureau of automotive repair. Then I just paid my own guy $60 ($10 tip) to fix it the next day since I was worried about the battery. (Who also told me they had connected it to the engine line or something? Not the headlights like they claimed)
I know $50 is nothing. I could’ve eaten it and normally probably would have. But i felt like it was the principle, they created the problem without my permission and then wouldn’t fix it. Which is again crazy because it’s only a $50 fix. plus the difference from before you buy a car compared to after was crazy.
The day after the dealers CS manager called me to discuss the review I left. ultimately he agreed to reimburse the repair fee and fix the scratch but it was only after I doubled down. at first said “we lost money servicing you at no cost” and I had to point out no, my dealer paid you the $230 diagnostic and than your tech offered to remove the splitter himself because he said it was an easy job which I appreciate but it doesn’t change the fact that because of unauthorized work you just traded one issue for another that I have to pay for out of pocket. (And that if I hadn’t have caught could’ve led to me buying an entirely new battery which in a new car my size would run me $300)
Idk. I felt kind of grimy leaving the complaints, and on a normal week I might’ve let it go. But I’d already had a rough week personally and dealerships have left a bad taste in my mouth throughout this whole process. I’ve had this car less than 2 months and it’s already spent half that time in a shop.
Anyways sorry it’s super long. I wanted to be thorough. Even though it worked out I was still wondering what people’s thoughts would be on this? AITJ Or was it justified?
TL;DR: Dealer mechanic removed a faulty part from my new to me car for free as a favor (claimed its an easy fix) but in the process did unauthorized work on my dash cam rewired it wrong and probably killed my battery. They initially denied fixing or covering the repair and implied that since they did me a free service I should let it go. My point is they just solved one issue than created a different one w unauthorized work that I had to pay out of pocket to fix. AITJ for asking them to cover the $50 instead of just dropping it?
