A controversial Verso theory people aren’t going to love.

SpoilerTheory

I’m starting this off knowing this is going to be perhaps a hated or at least…controversial opinion, but that is to be expected with any post talking about the ending, so here it goes!

A lot of support for Verso’s ending hinges on the fact that Verso’s soul fragment no longer wished to keep painting but…what if it’s not quite so simple as that?

To start with, the question Verso asked wasn’t entirely neutral, he did not ask, “Do you wish to keep painting?”

Instead he asked, “You’re tired of painting, aren’t you?”

And I say ‘asked’ very loosely as it was not so much an ask from Verso, but rather he is making a firm statement and then rhetorically asking for the mute soul fragment to contradict him.

If the situation was reversed, if Alicia got to the boy first and said, “You want to keep this world alive, don’t you?”

Framed like that…I can’t help but feel like the soul fragment would nod to that “question” as well.

We don’t know a whole lot about the real Verso as a child, but it was likely that he was a ‘people pleaser’ to authority figures. IE, Verso wanted to pursue music, but due to pressure from his parents he became a painter. The start of “Guarding truth with lies” he lied about his true feelings to please who he was with.

Is it possible that the remnant of Verso’s soul is doing the same? Just agreeing to keep the peace against the “authority figures” who have already made up their mind on what he is to do.

Or perhaps all that is wrong, and that isn’t at all what the real Verso was like, afterall I am only guessing.

But that just leads back to my central idea for this post. The dead can’t speak, but people often use them to support whatever point they want to make:

“If your father was still alive he’d tell you to…”

“If Jesus was around today, he’d tell us all to…”

“If JFK hadn’t been killed, then he would have…”

“If Verso was here, he would have made Alicia…”

We don’t know what Verso, not a painted copy, not a soul fragment, the real Verso, we don’t know what he would have done, not truly.

He might have sided with his painted counterpart, or he might have sided with Alicia, or he might have offered a compromise to unite them, or he might have fought them both in pursuit of his own desired ending.

There’s no way to truly know.
