2001 Camry fuel pump replaced but mechanic skipped the strainer. Same symptoms back 2 weeks later.

Me and my car got stranded and wouldn't start anymore so I called a mobile mechanic who replaced the fuel pump on my 2001 Camry gen4. He only replaced the pump itself, not the whole module (he said he couldn't get his hands on it so quickly)

When pulling the module out he found the strainer/fuel sock completely destroyed with pieces loose in the tank. He fished some out but didn't put a new strainer in. Said it'll be fine.

Right after the repair the car started perfectly, even when hot, which it couldn't do before. So the new pump was clearly working great from day one.l, and this confirmed the issue.

Now two weeks later it's taking longer to crank again especially when hot. Exact same symptoms, same timeline as when the original pump was dying.

Three questions:

  1. Has anyone seen the strainer completely disintegrate on one of these older Camrys when pulling the module?

  2. Could debris from that destroyed strainer be killing the new pump since there's nothing protecting the inlet now? Or is 2 weeks too quick for it to fail again? (No pump strainer really that problematic?)

  3. Could there be anything else causing my fuel pumps to fail ?

This mechanic has 20 years experience but seemed unsure what the pump strainer even does. Asked him if he was gonna put a new one in, and he said it wasn't needed.
