I spent months building an AI workout app that counts your reps using only your phone camera (no smartwatch needed)
I've been working on a side project called Glow up
The idea is simple:
Instead of tapping your phone after every set, the app uses your phone camera to track your movements and count reps in real time using MediaPipe.
Current features:
- AI rep counting for body exercises like squats, jumping jacks, push-ups, etc.
- AI tracking for face exercises like smiles, blinks, eyebrow raises, lip puckers, and more.
- Voice rep counting so you don't need to look at the screen.
- 30-day workout challenge.
- Timer mode for static exercises like planks and wall sits.
One of the biggest engineering challenges has been making rep counting reliable across different camera distances and lighting conditions. Some exercises work extremely well, while others are still difficult because of pose estimation limitations.
The app is aimed at Android users in India for now and will be free with ads.
I'm not posting this to promote it,I genuinely want feedback from developers and people who've worked with computer vision.
If you've built something using MediaPipe or pose estimation:
- did you improve rep-count accuracy?
- What caused the biggest issues in production?
- Is there anything you'd change before launch?
I'd appreciate any advice. Building this has been one of the hardest projects I've worked on.
