My interpretation knowing nothing about backrooms lore (Spoilers)
As someone who never knew anything about backroom lore,
My take on the movie was that Clark has a split personality and we’re viewing the movie from his delusional perspective. When he made the comment, that people are like furniture, I immediately thought… is all the furniture we’ve been seeing just piles of dead people? The movie shows so much furniture and treats it as if it’s scary with dramatic music when nothing inherently strange is happening. He’s just handling furniture and you see piles everywhere (scary intense music). I imagine if these were corpses then the dramatic music now makes a lot more sense.
Clark is a cannibalistic serial killer and he’s being seen by a therapist who seems to genuinely care for him and wants to possibly fix him. The problem with Clark is that he views himself as normal and sees everything else as the problem. Therapy seems to be such a pivotal plot point so it makes sense that psychosis could be the fundamental element that drives this movie.
Essentially we can’t rely on Clark’s pov or really anything in the backrooms because it’s a twisted mix of reality and grotesque. Clark is the killer, the regular store owner, the researcher that watches.. it all makes sense. Mary was trying to save him but realized she can’t and died for it.
The “backrooms” just seems to be the place where Clark lures his victims and eats them. And in his head, he’s just doing “research” and trying to save them when a monster comes to kill them. That seems to be the twist, Clark is also the monster and he genuinely views it as separate from himself. But Clark also disassociates so he uses the backrooms to compartmentalize his behavior. That’s the main plot point, he has no idea that his other personas exist.
It contradicts the lore ig but it makes sense for the direction it goes ie clark being the pirate that is killing people, randomly commenting that still lives can’t feel pain and are like furniture and you can eat them??? and seeing piles of furniture
everywhere in a completely hidden area.
Researcher Clark watches the videos of people recording themselves exploring the abandoned building and keeps a collection. And “saves” Mary obsessing over the hidden areas and how deep they go and trying to get her to talk about it and tell him everything she knows because it gives him a thrill.
Store owner Clark is completely oblivious to everything and is trying to figure out why this secret area in his store is there and talks to a therapist and physically can’t see the dead the bodies or any of the violence because he’s completely in psychosis and believes he’s a normal person.
Monster Clark is the one that kills and keeps piles of bodies and clothes everywhere and even eats them and/or turns them into human puppets
I think once that gap was closed and Normal Store Clark found the hidden area, he came to terms with his true self and realized he might as well embrace it, which is why store Clark was eaten by Monster Clark which left only the monster that consumes and the researcher that replays and highlights the rush on video and with victims over and over again. That’s why he makes them into human puppets because in his mind he’s talking to them and replaying the scene of what happened to them over and over and over. That was the final scene. It was his psychosis of talking to a human puppet of Mary and asking her everything she saw in his dungeon. But she’s obviously not actually responding because she’s dead. The point is that some of these moments actually happened but everything is so distorted in his memory and perception which is why he’s so insane. He just loves reenacting which is typical of serial killers.
More evidence:
-He loses control of himself when different personas come out. We see his TV switch to video of the backrooms which is the same TV that the researchers are watching in the beginning of the movie when they see a person die to monster clark . But he acts confused and surprised because that persona genuinely doesn’t know anything about it (psychosis)
-the breaker!! He immediately says I’ve never seen that before because a different personality added that to light up the hidden area which is why it takes so much power from the store and it’s why his electric bill is so high!! When the light turned on in there, he saw the hidden entrance through a crack in the wall. The phasing through the wall is psychosis. It’s a hidden entrance.
-Why was that one guy looking at the commercial in horror when he saw Clark? He must be a known killer to the public.
- It’s just so odd and random that when they ask why he wants them to explore this hidden area, he says “for research”. He knows there are cameras and is not lying to them at all. They are the “research”
-the workers head in the FRIDGE and Clark not being bothered by it at all
-the reenactment in therapy is what triggered his compulsion again . He got to replay with his therapist the moment he killed his wife. That’s why he’s put his wife’s hair on her and asked her to do it again. Thats his compulsion.
-missing sign of the employees from 1990.
-more to come I’m tired
