*Confession* Why do people push away the ones who stood by them in their darkest moments?
This is about my friend, not me.
My friend was in a relationship with a girl from Tench Bhata, Rawalpindi. She worked in the corporate office of a software university, while he was a struggler at the start of his career. He kept insisting, "Let's just be friends."
One day she called him and said, "You're so arrogant. Let me confess something—I love you very deeply."
He melted, and they started a relationship.
Soon after, she insisted, "Please send your parents to my home. My parents are fixing my rishta with an Army Captain."
The Captain belonged to a well-off family with a 1-kanal house in F-7. His father was a retired Brigadier. My friend came from a middle-class family.
My friend asked for some time because of sect differences, and he also wanted to be honest with her about things she didn't know before involving both families.
After she came to know a few things about him that she wasn't aware of before, she became annoyed and asked, "Why didn't you tell me before?" My friend replied that he was waiting for the right time.
She accepted the Captain's proposal and got married.
My friend was heartbroken, but because their relationship had only lasted about six months, he chose to ignore it, distract himself, and move on. He genuinely loved her soul more than anything else.
Life seemed perfect for her from the outside.
Then she suffered a miscarriage.
About a year later, she contacted my friend and apologized. She said she wondered if he had cursed her because nothing in her life was going right.
A month or two later she finally told him the truth.
She said her husband was a psychopath.
He verbally abused her, physically assaulted her, repeatedly raped her within the marriage, controlled every aspect of her life, and wouldn't even let her smile. If she smiled, he accused her of things and beat her.
Then she revealed something even worse.
The Captain had secretly been married before. He already had another wife and a daughter from that marriage. The other woman also had a son from a previous marriage. He kept that family with him in Kharian, where he was posted.
After one particularly bad incident, she confronted him and returned to her parents' house.
Unfortunately, her family—especially her mother—kept sending her back, hoping things would improve.
They never did.
She became pregnant again.
Some members of her Brother in-laws started pressuring her to abort the baby.
My friend begged her not to kill an innocent soul. He told her, "If you need help leaving, moving abroad, financial support—anything—I will help you.
She replied, "I don't need it. I want to nip the evil in the bud."
Those words shocked him.
Despite everything, she went back to that man again.
The abuse became even worse.
Today she has hearing loss in one ear and recurring vertigo because of what happened.
Eventually she told my friend never to contact her again.
Three or four months later he wished her on her birthday.
By then she had gotten divorced.
A few months after the divorce, my friend proposed to her.
She rejected him.
Later, my friend sent her an Instagram request from another account. She accepted and started talking, said she had never been married and was looking for someone.
Out of curiosity, I also approached her on Snapchat.
She again said she was unmarried and looking for a husband. She also mentioned she is a PhD and said most people were "not on her level."
Recently my friend updated his phone contacts after reinstalling his phone. She viewed his story and immediately blocked him.
What confuses me isn't that she rejected him.
She had every right to.
What I don't understand is why someone would push away the person who stood beside them during the darkest chapter of their life, knew every painful truth, never judged them, and was still willing to marry them.
Instead, she seems determined to erase that part of her life and present herself as someone completely different.
Why do people sometimes resent the people who helped them survive their worst days?
Is it trauma? Shame? Guilt? A desire to leave the past behind? Or is there something else psychologically going on?
I'd genuinely like to hear different perspectives.
