Skylight calendar alternatives with routines, it doesn't do what you think it does
Bought Skylight four months ago, did the research, thought I had it figured out. It doesn't do what I needed. Here's what I found going through alternatives, because the word "routines" means something different depending on which product you're looking at.
What Skylight calls routines is a chore section where you can add tasks. That's a parent-managed list, not a visual sequence a pre-reader can navigate on their own. People who recommend skylight for routines probably have older kids, the gap shows up when you need a 5 yo to move through a morning without an adult directing each step. What I was actually looking for: Google Nest Hub Max, calendar display, no routine structure for kids, interface changes constantly. Out. Amazon Echo Show, same story, smart home device that shows a calendar. Cozi, app-based so not in the running for a wall display. Hearth Display, it's the skylight calendar alternative I went with for families with younger kids needing more than a shared calendar, combines a picture-based routine sequence kids follow on their own with a shared family calendar and chore assignments. My daughter has been doing her morning without me directing it for about two months. The calendar side is roughly equivalent to skylight. Everything around the kids is where they're different products. Honest stuff: skylight isn't bad, it's a good shared calendar at a much lower price, if your kids are older or you mainly need adult coordination skylight is probably the right call. Hearth is meaningfully better for kid independence and meaningfully more expensive. Both can be true. What I don't use on hearth: the meal planning. The AI helper occasionally. We had a slow first month where I wondered if I'd made the wrong call before things clicked
