am I a bin rat?

I (30 M) live in a shared house. I've recently just lost my job due to health issues and are now claiming UC. I have recently moved into this property. I fear that claiming benefits will not totally cover my entire cost of living (food/rent). The other day there was 2x ready meals (a lasagne and a spag bol) in the kitchen bin that a house mate threw away. They were 2 days out of date. To me they were salvageable if you froze them so that's what I did. I took them out of the bin and put them - inconspicuously - into my section of the freezer. I hate to see waste but in all honesty, isn't that a bit low?
