I've made a graph on the textual continuity and relations of the various texts of the Silmarillion tradition from the History of Middle Earth. Basically it was made to easier showcase some peculiarities of the development of the mythology:

1. The Quenta Silmarillion of 1937 was in the way truly the first version intended to publication. Unlike the previous iteration, Quenta Noldorinwa it absorbed most of the plot points from the existing Great Tales (The Lay of the Children of Hurin, The Lay of Leithian) as well as incorporated all the new narrative from the annals so it would work as standalone book, and was an accumulation of all that Tolkien had written on his mythology in post-Lost Tales period.
2. The Narn i Chin Hurin, aka the Children of Hurin, the standalone novel, was developed from the chapter from the Quenta Silmarillion of 1937, and not from the Lost Tale or from the Lay. As a result some portions like Beleg rescuing Turin, Beleg's death, Turin and Gwindor getting to Nargothrond were best described in the Lay of the Children of Hurin, because in 1937 Tolkien didn't get to transform those chapters of the Lay to Prose.
3. The Annals of Aman and Grey Annals are definitely the most confusing part of Tolkien's creative process. In short, Tolkien took the Annals of the 1930s which were like Tale of Years a very short summarised chronology, and, as was told, were incorporated narratively in Quenta Silmarillion of 1937, and developed them into a fully fledged narrative, parallel to Quenta Silmarillion. But the Quenta Silmarillion text wasn't the basis the Annals, thus creating a lot of inconsistencies and contraditions to the point that it's hard to say whether a plot point was omitted from the Annals because Tolkien discarded it, or because it was already told in the Quenta Silmarillion and he didn't want to repeat himself. To make things worse, at the same period he worked on the Great Tales again and the tales of Turin and Tuor were updated only in the Annals; and while the Lay of Leithian was updated in both texts, I showed the connection to QS only in the graph, because Annals had just a couple of sentences from the new version, and another arrow would overcomplicate the graph. So now the Annals became the mainline text for the mythology.
4. Lastly in 1958-1959 when Tolkien started the new iteration on working on the QS manuscripts for the Darkening of Valinor and the Flight of the Noldor, he now used the text of the Annals as the basis of expansion and revision, and not the text of the QS tradition. Which also was the clue for Chritopher Tolkien to create a unified Silmarillion out of meging the Annals and the Quenta texts into a single book. And speaking of the Great Tales the new introduction of the Fall of Gondolin chapter and the first half of the Turin Turambar chapter were composed by Christopher Tolkien by making a short summary of the respective Great Tales

Edit: fixed some issues with the graph
