Why 14 days is sometimes not enough for Google Play closed testing

A lot of developers think closed testing is simple: find 12 testers, wait 14 days, done.

But here's what actually happens:

→ Day 3 one tester uninstalls the app
→ Counter resets to zero
→ You find a replacement
→ Day 8 another tester goes inactive
→ You start over again

Google doesn't just count days. It detects organic, genuine activity. If testers open the app once and forget about it, the counter can stall or reset.

This is why we run 14+1 bonus days the extra day acts as a buffer against unexpected drops.

A few things we've learned:

  • Testers must be real humans on real physical devices (no emulators)
  • Daily activity matters not just installation
  • Even 1 inactive tester can delay your entire launch
