Confused about karma requirements - how does the reputation system work??

I'm new here and noticed some subreddits have restrictions based on karma. Does this mean my posts won't show up until I reach a certain level? Also, for those who started recently, what's the best way to genuinely contribute and build a reputation during your first week? I’d love to hear how you guys got involved without hitting too many filters!
