Switching to Finance

Career Advice

Hey everyone,

I’m an EE student and recently I’ve been getting interested in finance, especially areas like quantitative finance/financial engineering.

I’ve heard that a lot of engineering students end up moving into finance because of the overlap in math, problem solving, programming, and analytical thinking.

I’m trying to understand what I should focus on during my degree if I want to keep this option open:

  • Should I focus more on programming (Python/C++), math, or learning finance basics?
  • Are there specific engineering skills that transfer well into finance?
  • Would a master’s in financial engineering/computational finance make sense after EEE?
  • What internships, projects, or skills would actually help?

I’m still early in figuring this out, so I’d appreciate advice from anyone who has moved from engineering into finance, fintech, or a similar field.

Thanks!
