Fired for attending a funeral?
Hi! I could really use some advice or just insight on this situation. I’m not sure what to do or if I’m being super dramatic about it or not.
I started working at my Walmart in April of this year. Early June my grandpas health took a turn for the worse. It was a very big deal and honestly just heartbreaking. I made sure my boss knew when we put him on hospice that I’d probably need some bereavement time.
He passed not even a day after being put on hospice and I quickly let my boss know the days I’d be taking my bereavement. I took them and went back to work like normal for about two days.
I then found out when the funeral would be and that it would be out of state. I told my boss when the funeral would be and that I already requested time off for it. I think I worked 7 days in a row and requested six off? I know that may seem like a lot lol but I was hardly getting out of bed at this point and decided to spend some time with my family out of state and actually grieve him.
When I get back home I realize that I can’t log into my Walmart account. I knew that we had been changing passwords via a coworker telling me but none of my bosses had let me know about this or when I’d need to change mine. I tried for a week to get into contact with someone but for some reason my shift leads really really suck at texting back.
I finally was told that I had pointed out because I needed to request time off three weeks in advanced. I was confused as I had told my big boss what was going on and was told at orientation that when something like a death comes up we could work around the three week thing. Now obviously I could not predict three weeks in advanced when my grandpa would pass or when his funeral would be.
I tried to explain that to my shift lead which is the person who explained that I pointed out and she did not respond to my text. Neither did another one of my bosses after I explained. I’m in a very tricky spot right now and I NEED an income. I feel so frustrated with everything and I just don’t know what to do at this point. Am I being dramatic? Should I just accept the fact that I lost my job? I reached out to my HR manager yesterday and am waiting for a response.
I want to fight for this job because i definitely need it and I feel it was unfair for me to get fired over something I couldn’t control. This is also my first time working a more corporate job (I turned 18 in April) and maybe this is just how it goes lol. Any advice would be appreciated!
