Best way to get from Kandivali East to Mumbai Central?

I need to travel from Kandivali East to Mumbai Central. I’m thinking the local train is my best bet to beat the road traffic, but I wanted to check with people who do this route.

If the train is the way to go:

What's the best time to travel? I really want to avoid getting completely crushed in the crazy morning rush hour. Is there a good time window where the trains are a bit emptier?

Slow vs. Fast trains: Do fast trains stop at Mumbai Central, or should I just take a slow train straight from Kandivali?
