"Transgender ideology" do you believe it exists? Why or why not?

CONTROVERSIAL/SENSITIVE OPINION

Flaired as "controversial/sensitive opinion" instead of "discussion" because I know this topic overall can be a bit controversial

But basically, I saw this topic come up in someone else's post and I wanted overall thoughts and opinions on it without hijacking their post. To be clear, these are the definitions of ideology I'm using, since I've seen people argue definitions instead of the actual point before:

>"Doctrine, philosophy, body of beliefs or principles belonging to an individual or group."

>"A set or system of theories and beliefs held by an individual or group, especially about sociopolitical goals and methods to attain them; in common usage, ideology is such a set of beliefs so strongly held by their adherents as to cause them to ignore evidence against such beliefs, and thus fall into error -- in this sense it is viewed as a negative trait; contrasted to pragmatism, and distinct from idealism."

I *used* to believe that there was no ideology, that I personally just happened to be wrong about being trans and that being trans doesnt come with a certain set of beliefs or politics or ideas. But I also didnt really care to learn what "ideology" meant back then and had attached a negative connotation to it. I thought an "ideology" was inherently wrong, harmful, false, and used to push an agenda. Which in many cases, yes, that is how an ideology is used. But its not an inherent part of an ideology.

I do think there's a transgender ideology by a technical definition. I think it's impossible to have a community of similar individuals speaking on one specific topic and not have a base ideology arise from it. Overarching beliefs, politics, philosophies, etc., will always arise from a group of similar-minded people given time. Yes, they'll be some people in the community that disagree with some aspects, but that doesnt dismantle the ideology.

But I also dont think of the "trans ideology" as a "boogyman" like some people speak of it as. And I think thats a big problem when talking about ideologies, a lot of people hear "ideology" and believe it is always a harmful, wrong, false belief used to push an agenda just like I thought. An ideology can and has certainly been used that way, but its not a requirement by definition.

You can believe the trans ideology is pushed on people and harmful or you can believe its not pushed on people and it's non-harmful. Either way, it's an ideology. How it's used or not used doesn't alter the definition.

I personally don't believe the trans ideology was intended to be harmful. But it has grown into that in many cases (whether the person affected is trans, detrans, questioning, cis*, or has no trans history). I also think overall its "core values" as an ideology are good: freedom of expression, acceptance of sex non-conformity**, the right to self-identify, and even gender abolition in some groups.

All good things, in my opinion. But then there's the rising beliefs that to be trans, you have to present a certain way. That you have to be confined to a rigid binary of expression, or if you're nonbinary then you *owe* androgyny. If you're cis but gnc, are you *sure* you're not trans? "You could just trial hrt." Feminine men are "eggs" waiting to hatch into "chicks" (read: women). "Testosterone could save him (her)." In trying to show people they have options in terms of gender expression and freedom, a huge portion of the trans community has become pushy and assumptive, has come to demand the same gender performance the patriarchy does, and has seemed to overall forget that gnc people exist.

Basically, TL;DR:

I believe that the "transgender ideology" exists, as all communities based around an idea will give rise to one, but it isnt a cult or boogyman out to get your kids. But that it *has* done harm in it's current state.

.

* I separated detrans and cis because not all detransitioners consider themselves cis, and some detransitioners use "detrans" as an identity instead of just a label

** I specify sex non-conformity and not gender non-conformity because being gnc is not always accepted. Some gnc people are pushed to transition, or trans people are told they're "not trans enough" or "not actually trans" for being gnc
