Missed nap = nighttime distress - to push for a nap or no?
TLDR; how much do you push to support naps happening, when lack of nap causes significant distress overnight, but child doesn’t seem to be able to fall asleep on the go… Can babies have FOMO?
My baby is 5 1/2mo, primarily breastfed tho we are just starting solids and he has the occasional bottle.
Overall he sleeps well - roughly 11.5-12.5hr out of 24. Overnight blocks are usually 1.5-4.5 hours (teething, weather, porta cot use can shorten this) and he sleeps in a crib beside my bed - we are unable to do a safe co-sleep set up at this time for various reasons. Bedtime is usually 10:30 and wake at 7 (1-3 feeds overnight)
Naps are where we struggle. He will only contact nap and any attempts to transfer result in an instant wake. Naps are typically a handful of 20-40 min through the day with one 90-120min late afternoon. In principal this is fine and we’ve generally been able to nap if out or at home However; recently he has become very alert and it is near impossible to get him to sleep if *anything* is happening. I don’t mind except that this means by nighttime he crashes HARD at like 7 and then becomes extremely distressed when he wakes, which occurs with every sleep cycle. It’s like he’s unable to connect to the sleep cycles. It reminds me of night terrors in terms of level of distress. He also then struggles overnight to establish any linking of sleep cycles, and wakes basically every 45 minutes, if we’re lucky around 3 am he’ll manage to fall into a three or four hour block of sleep.
I’m a bit unsure as to how much to push to support naps, given the lack of them causes so much distress at night, versus how much to allow sleep pressure to just keep building. It is as if he doesn’t have enough during the day, or maybe he just has very severe FOMO lol. As someone with ADHD, I know that it is possible to become overstimulated and have a hard time falling asleep despite being utterly exhausted, part of me wonders if there’s a similar pattern happening here, and how best to support it. I don’t mind as much about the lack of nap as I do about how distressed overnight gets, so if there’s ways to even reduce the distress without the nap, I’m open to that as well.
Also quite happy to keep contact napping if that is best, however if trying to transition him to the cot will better support him, open for any tips on this. Overnight he transfers beautifully most nights, but there’s something about it being after 7 or 8 am that he develops a sixth sense and no matter what routine you use, he will not transfer.
