YA chick lit horror (?) with high school teenager FL who falls for ghost from a mining accident

I recall reading this in the 90s, and it felt like one of those RL Stine or Christopher Pike-ish books at the time. I don’t think it’s either of their works though.

The main character, I believe, was a teenage girl and she falls in love with a mysterious dark-haired new boy who falls for her as well. But every night he has to return to the mine where he died along with his father and a group of miners in a tragic accident many years ago. 

At one point, she is wearing her prom dress and dancing at the entrance of the mine, and a rock monster comes out to dance with her.

I swear to God I’m not making this up. I hope.
