Ice budget 85 billion, what it could be spent on instead.
1. Expedited Processing and Legal Representation
- The Problem: The current system relies on massive, long-term detention because the immigration court backlog is years long.
- The Alternative: Investing a fraction of that $85 billion into significantly increasing the number of immigration judges, legal aid, and processing centers would allow cases to be heard in months rather than years. This would remove the need for expensive long-term detention, as people could be integrated into the economy or processed and deported far more efficiently.
2. Workforce Development and Integration
- The Problem: Many immigrants and low-income citizens lack access to vocational training, language services, or local credentialing.
- The Alternative: A portion of that budget could fund regional job-training centers and English-as-a-second-language (ESL) programs. By turning immigrants into high-functioning tax-paying participants in the economy, the investment pays for itself through increased tax revenue and economic output.
3. Housing and Social Stability
- The Problem: Poverty is often a cycle exacerbated by housing instability.
- The Alternative: If $85 billion were diverted to housing subsidies or "Housing First" initiatives for the extreme poor (both citizen and non-citizen), it could reduce homelessness, decrease the burden on emergency rooms, and provide the stability required for people to hold steady jobs.
4. Healthcare Access
-
The Problem: Denying healthcare to the poor and uninsured often leads to higher systemic costs, as they rely on emergency room care when conditions become critical.
-
The Alternative: Providing preventative care and health access to the most vulnerable populations is historically much cheaper than the cost of chronic emergency care or the secondary costs of lost productivity due to illness.
The basic republican logic, is that safety nets for immigrants and the poor, could incentivise people not to work and destroy the economy, which could in theory effect me. So ide rather cut safety nets, tell them to get a job, and make cruelty the point of detention camps for immigrants as a deterrent so more dare not come.
