Hello train lovers, SONICFAN11111 is back with a brand new review. Now today, I'm gonna talk about something truly special that was a part of my childhood. It's not gonna going to be a review, but a history about the legendary steam engine himself, Thomas the Tank Engine. So sit back and relax as I going to talk about Sodor's beginnings to today.

PART 1: THE RAILWAY SERIES

Thomas the Tank Engine began as bedtime stories told by Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry to his son Christopher, who was ill with measles in 1942–1943. Awdry, a railway enthusiast and Anglican clergyman, drew inspiration from real locomotives and his observations of trains. He built a wooden toy engine named Thomas, sparking the character's creation.

The stories were published as *The Railway Series*. The first book, *The Three Railway Engines* (1945), introduced Edward, Henry, and Gordon but not Thomas. Thomas debuted in the second book, *Thomas the Tank Engine* (1946), as a cheeky blue tank engine based on the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway's E2 class (0-6-0T). Early illustrations were by Reginald Payne, emphasizing realism. Wilbert Awdry wrote 26 books until 1972, creating the Island of Sodor—a fictional setting blending real British railways—with characters like Percy, James, and Toby. His son Christopher continued the series, adding 16 more books until 2011, for a total of 42 volumes.

PART 2: THE TELEVISION SERIES

In the late 1970s, British producer Britt Allcroft discovered the books and secured rights for a TV adaptation. *Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends* (later shortened to *Thomas & Friends*) premiered in 1984, using detailed scale models, live-action filming, and stop-motion animation.

The early "model era" (1984–2008) featured narration by Ringo Starr (seasons 1–2), followed by others like George Carlin (US) and Michael Angelis (UK). It closely adapted book stories, emphasizing morals about responsibility and teamwork. In 2009, the series switched to full CGI animation, starting with the special Hero of the Rails. This allowed more dynamic action and international adventures. From 2018 (Big World! Big Adventures), Thomas explored global settings with new themes of diversity and exploration. The original series ran 24 seasons, ending in 2021.

I won't talk about All Engines Go since I don't like that show

PART 3: NEW SERIES ANNOUNCED AND MERCH

In January 2026, Mattel announced a refreshed design for Thomas—more expressive and modern while rooted in classic steam train aesthetics—along with a new logo and upcoming content, signaling another franchise relaunch. The merchandising of Thomas and Friends are highly collectible for both child and adult collectors. The merch includes Ertl, Take N Play, Wooden Railway and of course the fan favourite of them all, the TOMY/Trackmaster toy line.

ENDING:

So in conclusion, the Thomas franchise will keep growing and growing and the series will be beloved by many people both old and young. I'm SONICFAN11111 bidding you farewell.
