AIW for leaving my business partner
my business partner (26m) and i (26m) have been running a side business together for about seven years. before that we were just close friends who bonded over the same interests. we've known each other since we were like 12. this thing started as a hobby in high school and slowly grew into something that actually makes decent money.
for the last three years i've been doing much of the work. building the client base, handling the finances, doing the marketing, staying up late on weekends making sure everything runs smooth. he helps when he can but he's always had one foot in his full time job and one foot in our thing.
last month i told him i think we should go all in. quit our jobs, register the business properly, get an office, make this real. i had a full plan laid out. projections, savings runway, client pipeline, everything. i wasn't winging it i genuinely thought this through for months.
he said he wasn't ready and he needed more time to feel secure and that he didn't want to leave his job until things were more stable. he apologized and said he hoped i understood.
i told him it was fine. but it wasn't.
since that conversation something shifted in me. i stopped putting in the extra hours. stopped chasing new clients. stopped being the one driving everything forward. he's noticed and has been trying to pick up the slack and keeps asking if we're good and saying he's almost ready now and that he just needed a moment.
but that moment already passed for me. i spent years carrying this thing and the one time i asked him to jump with me he hesitated. and now i can't unsee it.
our shared workspace lease is up in a couple months and i'm honestly thinking about just telling him i'm done and going solo. i haven't said anything yet because i know it'll blindside him but i also don't think i can keep pretending i'm still in this the way i was before.
