Is this illegal for building hours ?

Hey I’m currently a first responder transitioning into a state agency with a very extensive aviation unit. Currently hold a PPL with about 80 sum hours and had a question about building hours to my commercial time. Im in touch with some of the current pilots flying Kodiak 100s and bell helicopters who offered to take me up and show me some things while I’m working the road waiting to hit my 3 years to transition into the unit. Because I technically am getting paid while working as a patrol officer, would it be illegal for the Kodiak instructor to take me up flying and teach? I would be doing this as an extension of my current duties.
