Guy cried and said “I love u but its too hard between us” before breaking up

The reason am asking this is because idk if his tears really meant anything. Is it normal for guys to cry like that and say things like these? If one of u guys had to tell me the truth, was he lying and pretending just to get rid of me or what? Also, just for ur information, our relationship was perfectly fine (at least imo) except the fact that his family had issues with him dating me cuz am from a different caste.
