Is getting my tubes tied against my husbands wishes a death sentence for my marriage?

Ask r/Marriage

I (F28) am currently pregnant with my second child. We have a toddler and this pregnancy has been hard mentally. I hate being pregnant always have but this one took a toll on me that my first didn’t. Probably because I didn’t have toddler responsibilities at the time. I’m a SAHM so childcare / children responsibilities are 90% on me.

My husband is a workaholic. He comes from a very successful driven family where the men work and aren’t very active in family life. Example my husband has only taken our two year old to the park twice since he was born. Once to show it to him because he built the park and the second time because I forced him to take him to the park after requesting he spend more quality time with our kid. Sometimes when I do plan things for us to do together he is visibly distracted or verbally expresses he wants to leave. Example recently I planned a pool day (first one for him) and when I mentioned us leaving he was like “thank god”.

He is all about his job and seems to only be passionate about that. I don’t care so much about the lack of time spent with me (I have family very close by and a really good social life) but I am very resentful of his lack of quality time with our kids.

I recently brought up getting my tubes tied because I do not want to have anymore kids with him. It’s clear to me he doesn’t value family life/ quality time and I don’t have the help at home. To my surprise he wasn’t on board. He comes from a big family 7 siblings. While he doesn’t want THAT many kids he was not on board with this one being our last.

Obviously I do not need his consent but what would be the consequences of such a permanent decision? I do love him but I’m tired of begging him to be a “family man” when he isn’t. I’ve accepted that and am adjusting. My father has been very excited to spend quality time with our boys and do all the “things” but I do not see a point and adding more kids to this and want to be responsible.
