AITAH My fiancée won't contribute financially to our future home.

(Belgrade, Serbia)

Hi everyone! I'd love to hear your general opinion about the situation I'm currently in.

I've been in a relationship with my girlfriend for almost seven years, and we're planning to get married this September and start living together.

A little about her:

She works as an independent attorney (self-employed lawyer).

She owns a 32 m² apartment in the wider city center, along with a parking space in the building's garage (combined value is approximately $160,000).

She has a stable gross monthly income of around $1,500–2,000 (for comparison, the average salary in Belgrade is around $900).

She has one brother.

Her parents bought her the apartment when she moved to Belgrade from her hometown to attend university. As part of the family arrangement, her brother inherited (or will inherit) the family house instead.

On the other hand, I worked in a bank (in accounting) until three months ago, when I was laid off due to a company restructuring related to AI-driven changes. Since then, I've been trying to find another job in my field, but without success. While I'm looking for a permanent position, I've been taking on various temporary jobs just to keep some money coming in.

Now, my parents own a piece of building land in Dalmatia (Zadar, Croatia), which they could sell for around $165,000. Their plan is to give me that money so I can buy a one-bedroom apartment in Belgrade in a good location. The agreement with my girlfriend (future wife) was that we would initially live in her apartment. She also uses it as her law office because, as she says, she "can't afford to rent office space" at the moment—which is true, but this becomes relevant later.

This is where the story splits into two separate issues (although they're probably connected).

Issue 1

A two-bedroom apartment in Belgrade (so we'd have enough space for a future child) costs around $200,000. That means we'd be about $40,000 short.

My original plan was to take out a loan, which would have cost me around $200 per month. But since I lost my job, that's no longer possible.

Whenever I bring this up, she never even suggests that she might take out the loan instead. After all, she owns a garage parking space worth around $25,000, so in reality we'd only need to finance about $15,000.

However, she says she doesn't want to sell either the parking space or her apartment or invest any of her own property into our future shared home.

Issue 2

Last night she told me she has a plan to grow her law practice to the point where she'll be earning around $4,000–5,000 per month. If that happens, she says she'll need to hire trainee lawyers to work in her office.

The strange part is that she also said she'd let her brother live in the apartment that currently serves as her office. When I asked, *"Where will your brother live if the trainees start working there every day?"*, she replied that she'd simply rent office space elsewhere. I then asked whether her brother would pay rent for living in her apartment, and she said no. According to her, he already "earned" the right to live there rent-free because he built her law firm's website.

At this point, I honestly feel completely alone in this whole situation. It feels like every solution involves me making sacrifices, while she refuses to contribute financially when it comes to our future together. I'm getting to the point where I almost want to buy a small studio apartment on my own out of spite, and if she has a problem with that, just end the relationship altogether. Am I overreacting? Am I seeing this the wrong way? I'd genuinely appreciate some honest outside perspectives.
